New Era commercial featuring actors Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski exchanging baseball trash talk:
I like. Things that pique my interest?
1) It's entirely in black and white. I like it, but find it curious, since most people don't like to watch anything that's black and white unless it's an old Three Stooges rerun. But it helps set this commercial apart from others, helps draw out the contrasts between the two men and their settings. Brings a touch of class, if you will.
2) Choice of actors. I wonder how well-known these actors' baseball loyalties lie. I happen to know them because I know John Krasinski grew up in Massachusetts (as did his The Office co-stars Steve Carrell and Mindy Kaling) and that Alec Baldwin grew up in New York. But-- Alec Baldwin plays Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, whose Massachusetts upbringing is brought up in many plot points throughout many episodes and seasons. Exhibit A:
3. Alec Baldwin's ringtone. It's the Triumphal March from Act II of the opera Aida! I'm pretty sure that's what it is, because I'm playing that piece for my next orchestra concert. I wonder who decided it should be the ringtone used in this commercial. And I wonder how many others identified it as such, or if I'm mistaken because I'm biased. No, no, I can't be wrong; I'm used to being wrong but just listen to the ringtone and the first five seconds of this video. I'm right, right?
4. Disparate settings as commentary on teams and fans. Alec Baldwin, the Yankees fan, is at a dinner party and breaks away from two women to answer the phone. John Krasinski, the Red Sox fan, is on the other line, alone in his kitchen-- maybe even alone in his house (why is he fixing himself cereal?)-- and wearing his cap on his head and a thin band on his left hand ring finger.
5. Attitudes toward the rivalry ( or "rivalry"). I think the script is spot-on in terms of how the rivalry is viewed on either side. And I pity other cities, that they have to put up with so much with all the talk about the bad blood between these two teams and cities.
I'm not much of a baseball person-- I like watching football, actually-- but having grown up in New England it's hard to ignore or get away from anything even tangentially related to the Red Sox. And I enjoy a good commercial.
You nailed the ringtone, more obvious at about 0:49.
